David Chan is a drummer, percussionist, composer, and educator currently based in Toronto via Goderich, Ontario and Montreal. He began studying piano at the age of 7, shifting his musical focus to the drumset at thirteen. Throughout high school, David nurtured his growing love for rhythm and musics of all kinds, performing in diverse musical settings including jazz ensembles, rock groups, musicals, choirs, concert bands, and the London Youth Symphony. He received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music from the Goderch District Collegiate Institute (2000).

Continuing his studies at the University of McGill (B.Mus., Jazz Performance, 2005), David had the opportunity to study with world class jazz musicians and educators Jan Jarcyk, Kevin Dean, Joe Sullivan, Gordon Foote, Andre White, Remi Bolduc. But, it was his private teacher, Chris McCann, a most inspiring educator, who first introduced him to the music of West Africa. In November 2005, David traveled to Ghana to study the music of the Ewe, Ga, and Akan ethnic groups and quickly developed a profound love and respect for these cultures and musical traditions to which he is now deeply dedicated.

As a musician, David brings integrity, hard work, open-mindedness, and creative spontaneity to any situation. His broad tastes and influences reflect the wide range of musical genres to which he was exposed from an early age. He is currently playing and performing in and around Toronto with DrumHand (contemporary perc-jazz), Shoot The Cameraman (alt-country), The Mike Field Jazz Trio, and Mr.Something Something (afrobeat).
